History
The network of Eco-peinture consists of 49 member companies, virtually all of the retailers, brand owners and producers who market paint products in Quebec. The paint leftovers recovery system also involves 760 Quebec municipalities serving 93% of the population. In 2010, through this partnership, over 6,150 tons of paint residues were diverted from waste disposal sites.
At the onset, during the first few years the Eco-peinture program was being implemented and developed, a new model of collaboration emerged between government administrators and the paint industry in Quebec. The partnership between the paint industry and the various levels of management, the Ministry of Environment and Recyc-Québec on one hand, and the RCMs (Regional County Municipalities) and the administrative officers of municipalities on the other, has contributed to consolidate the operating parameters of our organization.
At the initial stages, when the Eco-peinture program was launched, paint leftovers were recovered through a network consisting of RONA retailers, Coop fédérée, as well Matériaux à bas prix; over the years, Groupe Patrick Morin, Réno-Dépôt and certain BMR stores joined the network, which The Home Depot and Canac Marquis chains joined later on in 2008. Today, we can say that almost all of the brand owners and producers who sell paint in Quebec are active members of Eco-peinture, therefore providing a fair competitive environment for all companies who market paint in Quebec.
Moreover, in the very beginning, a few municipalities were quickly committed to the program and then a number of RCMs joined the ranks in addition to a few regional ecocentres; and, eventually, in 2008, the large ecocentre network of Montreal followed. Today, virtually all municipalities and RCMs are partners in the program.
